Building Better Body Image: See yourself through kinder eyes

3–4 minutes

In a world where every scroll through social media brings up filtered selfies and “perfect” bodies, it’s no surprise that so many of us struggle with how we see ourselves. Can you build better body image with all this pressure? Body image isn’t just about what we look like—it’s about how we feel about how we look. And if you’ve ever stood in front of the mirror and wished something was different, you’re not alone.

But here’s the good news: body image isn’t fixed. Like any mindset, it can shift. It can grow. And most importantly, it can improve. Here’s how to start healing your relationship with your body—step by step.

Your body image – how you see yourself – has a significant impact on many areas of your life. Take steps to have a better body image today!

1. Unfollow the Noise

Start by curating your media diet. If the content you consume makes you feel worse about yourself—whether it’s influencers, fitness accounts, or even certain friends—it’s okay to mute or unfollow. Follow people who celebrate body diversity, authenticity, and self-love. You deserve a feed that lifts you up, not tears you down.

2. Talk to Yourself Like You’d Talk to a Friend

We’re often our own harshest critics. Next time you catch yourself thinking something negative about your body, pause. Would you say that to your best friend? Probably not. Practice swapping out those harsh inner comments with something kinder. Instead of, “I look gross,” try, “I’m doing my best, and that’s enough.”

How would you talk to a friend? If you talk to yourself in very critical ways, your body image and mood will suffer.

3. Focus on What Your Body Does, Not Just How It Looks

Your body is so much more than a number on a scale or the size of your jeans. It lets you hug your loved ones, dance in your kitchen, laugh until your stomach hurts. Start appreciating your body for the life it lets you live—not just the way it looks in the mirror.

4. Dress for You

Wear clothes that make you feel confident, comfortable, and most of all, yourself. Don’t squeeze into something just because it’s trendy. When you feel good in your clothes, you’re way more likely to feel good in your skin.

5. Move in a Way That Feels Good

Exercise doesn’t have to be about burning calories. It can be about joy, strength, energy, and mental clarity. Whether it’s dancing in your room, hiking with friends, or just stretching in the morning, find movement that makes you feel alive—not punished.

Move in a way to make you feel good. For best body image, let go of ideas around ‘correcting’ or ‘punishing’ the body with exercise.

6. Get Real About Comparisons

Everyone’s body is different, and that’s the point. Comparing yourself to others is a game you’ll never win. Instead, focus on your own journey. Progress in body image isn’t linear, and that’s okay. Some days will be harder than others—but every step forward matters.

7. Talk It Out

If body image struggles are deeply affecting your mental health, know that there’s no shame in reaching out for help. Therapists, support groups, and even trusted friends can make a big difference. You don’t have to navigate this alone.
